The Design Process

Initial Design

I was inspired to create a job aid for seventeen of my colleagues when they asked me for help printing out their grades as part of district requirements, as none were available. As I planned to demonstrate a process, an instructional video was the better job aid choice for my colleagues. The project commenced with a preliminary outline structured in Canva to visualize action items and create targeted learning objectives. This served as the outline for the video.

Storyboarding

I developed a conversational text-based storyboard to outline dialogue for the instructional video. This served as a blueprint for the tutorial's narrative structure and pacing, ensuring a cohesive and engaging learning experience for my colleagues. I did this while printing my student grades - thirteen classes for roughly 350 learners.

Development

The course development transitioned to Canva. I utilized censored screenshots of the LMS platform, Frontline Education Teams, to create a relatable and similar experience. The video template and icons from Canva followed an "elementary" theme. Aware of the modality principle, I limited the on-screen text as I incorporated visuals. Following the voice principle, I recorded my voice for a friendly and familiar learning experience.

Implementation

My colleagues and office staff found the instructional video helpful and were able to print out their grades quickly. They have saved it to their Google Drive, which will be accessible for the coming years.

Final Thoughts

The end of the academic year is hectic, with multiple deadlines, requirements, and expectations. I'm glad I created this instructional video for my colleagues. Not only did my dedicated instruction impact my younger learners, but I was also able to utilize adult learning theories to impact my colleagues.
According to our attendance clerk, this solution improved accuracy and reduced administrative burden for co-workers.

If I could do it again,

Reflecting on this project, I would have approached it differently in several ways:

Earlier Planning: Starting earlier would have allowed for more thorough planning and development of the video, potentially incorporating additional features or resources.
Platform Selection: While Canva is a versatile tool, PowerPoint might have been a more suitable choice for this project, given its integration with Microsoft Office and potential familiarity among educators.
Infographic and Survey: Including an infographic would have provided a visual overview of the process, complementing the video content. Additionally, a survey could have been used to gather educators' feedback on the videos' effectiveness and identify areas for improvement.

Despite the time constraints and educator-related duties, the instructional video was a valuable resource for my colleagues. I aim to incorporate these improvements to create even more effective and comprehensive training materials in the future.
